Seasonal School Road Safety Campaign

In Mozambique we are committed to community safety through school awareness programs conducted on an annual basis in the Manhica District of Maputo Province.

In Xinavane there are over 31 000 inhabitants that live in close proximity to the roads, as well as use the roads on a daily basis to get to work and school. The importance of the road safety initiative therefore is to focus on the road hazards, risks and preventative measures to help children, teachers, and families to become safer road users.

A key part of this is to ensure an understanding on how the sugar cane vehicles operate and use the roads on a daily basis in order to maximize precaution while creating a community safety culture. In March 2020 the annual road safety campaigns were conducted by the Unitrans Africa Mozambique safety representatives at 12 schools around the sugar estates.

“We normally see kids running behind trucks to pick up sticks of sugarcane. We address the risks associated with these behaviors. It’s done at schools so they get more emphasis from teachers. These roads are normally not busy during off crop, thus we also address the change of vehicle flow to communities through schools.” ~ Kinott Ruzai, SHEQ Administrator, Xinavane depot

In addition to this the team used one of its grader fleet to fill the main village road in Xinavane. The road had been damaged and degraded over time. This initiative was done in order to make it easier for the community to use the road in their various forms of transport.
