Our Footprint in Botswana

Fuel, Transport and Logistics

Unitrans' biggest operation in Botswana is the transport of petroleum and diesel by its extensive fleet. The Botswana Logistics office manages the import and distribution of fuel to its customers.

Unitrans Botswana has the highest SHEQ (Safety Health Environment and Quality) standard, putting the Supply Chain services apart from its competition. Unitrans Botswana focuses on Performance-Based Standards (PBS) using load maximised tankers to transport fuel economically and effectively, saving their customers costs and minimising the impact on the environment.

Our Botswana operation proudly employs nearly 500 staff, most of whom have been upskilled through Unitrans Driver Training Academy. The academy recruits, educates, qualifies, and then employs local drivers into one of Africa's most respected award-winning learnership driver facilities.

To learn even more about our footprint in Botswana, please read our overview below.

Unitrans Botswana (Pty) Ltd was incorporated in 1969. Initially the business was limited to bring in abnormal loads and equipment to (BCL) and the Morupule Power Station and the mines in the early seventies. In 1985, Unitrans became more active within Botswana offering a parcel service to Gaborone and full container loads of consumer products. By 1987, Unitrans began hauling fuel on behalf of Caltex and Shell to Lobatse/Gaborone and Francistown. Caltex fuel was collected from Durban and Shell fuel was uplifted from Secunda near Johannesburg and the fleet increased to approximately 15 vehicles registered and managed in Botswana. In 1988 we deployed vehicles taking fuel from Francistown to Malawi on behalf of Agmin (The Malawi Government fuel agency at the time). In 1990 Unitrans Botswana opened the Francistown office, with warehousing facilities offering a rail to road service to Zambia, Zaire and Malawi and the fleet grew to 22 vehicles. Since the mid-1990s, Unitrans has had a steady growth and the fleet then stood at + 140 extra-heavy duty vehicles with over 380 employees.

Currently the fleet stands at 279 vehicles with more than 600 employees. We do business with all the major Oil Marketing Companies that operate in Botswana. Our operations include contracts with Astron Energy, Botswana Oil Limited, Engen, Total, VIVO Energy, Puma Energy, and Fuel in Motion for transportation of fuel as well as PPC for the transportation and warehousing of cement. We also transport animal feed for Nutrifeeds in Botswana throughout the country to various farms. We are the largest transport contractor in Botswana and have the biggest market share in the road haulage of both Fuel and Cement in Botswana

Unitrans Botswana is an ISO certified company having an integrated management system of ISO9001:2015 Quality Management System, ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management System and ISO45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System. Unitrans is also certified on SANS 1395-1:2014, Road Transport Management System (RTMS).

In order to comply with the ISO, customer and legal requirements, Unitrans Botswana has opted for an integrated SHEQ management system to manage and control all Policies, Procedures and Safe Work Instructions. To this end Unitrans Botswana has invested in an electronic document control management system called Isometrix.

Isometrix is considered an integral part of the company’s operation to assist the senior management in compliance and constant improvement of the SHEQ management system. As part of this holistic approach, Unitrans Botswana recognize the importance of safety, training, bulk vehicle operator (BVO) wellness and mass verification methods as a means of being a responsible road freight company.

The management and staff of Unitrans Botswana is committed to remain compliant to all legal, customer and shareholder compliance.
